Here it is Tuesday, only 5 days from Christmas. Let me tell you, I am counting down the days. Not because I am excited about Christmas. I pretty much have the holiday on ignore at home. Don’t have a tree up, no lights on the bushes and trees, no wreath on the door. I am counting down the days because I just want this Hell Week over with.
If you have ever worked in retail over the Christmas holidays, you probably understand what I’m saying. The week gets busier and busier. Shopper get more and more frantic. Tempers are short, lines are long, and all I want to do is crawl home each night, take a hot bath and go to bed. Some nights I don’t even eat dinner. I’m too tired.
Tomorrow I am going to call my mom and check on her. Make sure she is OK and is ready for the holiday. She is not cooking a big family dinner this year. She has been sick so much that she just doesn’t have the strength to deal with cleaning the house and cooking all that food and hosting a bunch of people at her house all day. My sister is going to host the dinner at her house this year and everyone has been asked to bring a covered dish to help with the food. That’s all fine with me. I am going to be so tired that bringing something that I can pick up already cooked on Saturday when I take my lunch break and carry it with me on Sunday is all I can handle.
Recipes are not my thing – I guess you could say that I have a little trouble following instructions. But I am hungry and nothing sounds good, so I am going to find a recipe and try something new for dinner tonight.
My dinners are usually built around some kind of chicken or fish. I love chicken and eat chicken at least three times a week. I also love fish, especially salmon. I wish salmon was more affordable around here. I know it costs a lot because it is caught half the country away from here and has to be flown and trucked across half of America.
Sometimes I get a small salmon fillet from the seafood counter at Kroger, but most of the time that I shop for groceries it is so late at night the deli and seafood counters have packed up and shit down for the night before I get there.
I picked up a small tray of Tilapia fillets at the store, so I am looking for a recipe for the Tilapia. My cousin told me that she cooks it up by mixing equal parts of mayonnaise and Parmesean cheese, then spreading that mix over the Tilapia and baking it in the oven for 20 minutes. That sounds easy enough, right? That’s my dinner plans – I hope it turns out as good as it sounds.
Seriously do not feel like cooking tonight. Its been a shitty day all day long. I can’t wait to get home, kick off my shoes, and get into my soft and cuddly PJs. The last thing I want to do tonight is cook dinner.
So now the big question is, which pizza place and what pizza sounds good? The last pizza I ordered for delivery to my house was Papa Johns and it sucked ass. I seriously could barely choke down even one piece of it. I had to throw the crap into the trash. I almost called to bitch out the manager, but I don’t believe that would have done a damn bit of good. If he wanted to give me money back, it would have been nice. But they should have paid me to eat that crap. And I doubt they would have given me a refund. They probably would have just made another shit pizza for me. What good would that do I couldn’t stand the first one. I sure as hell don’t want another one!
So there are three other choices that deliver to my neighborhood. I’ve got food old Pizza Hut, who sent me a pizza a couple years ago that gave us all food poisoning from the sausage topping they put on it. That was fun – NOT. I’ve got Dominoes and a little independent store called Jets. I have no idea how they got the name Jets for a pizza place. But, whatever. I called Jets once and the boy who answered the phone didn’t speak English. So I had to hang up on him.
Guess that leaves Dominoes. They had better not fuck up the pizza tonight. I’m running out of places to call and pizza is getting so fucking expensive, this might be the last pizza I ever buy.
The idea of one more burger for lunch is making me just sick. When did hamburgers become the only lunch choice for people who work 9 to 5? Doesn’t anybody go out to a full service restaurant and just order a real meal and enjoy a proper lunch any more?
When I was a kid, my dad used to invite the family out to lunch with him a couple of times every month. It was always exciting to get dressed up pretty and go to his office. We were paraded around the building and introduced to new employees and expected to exchange pleasantries with the employees we already knew.
Then we went to a nice restaurant for a proper meal. We were given menus and allowed to choose whatever we wanted to order. The only catch was that we were expected to eat the whole thing, and if we couldn’t finish the meal, it was put in a box and taken home and that was our next dinner. That would not have meant as much to any of us if all we did was drive through a fast food joint and get a hamburger.
How many ways can you list to make dinner using hamburger meat? I am stocked up on ground beef and need to find a few new ways to cook with it. I have obviously made hamburgers and cheeseburgers. I also have made spaghetti and meatloaf. Now I am stuck for new ideas.
I don’t buy Hamburger Helper because it has so much salt and other chemicals in it. Does anyone know how to make the different Hamburger Helper dishes from scratch with fresh ingredients? I would like to learn how to make stroganoff and a couple other meals that are some kind of sauce and pasta or rice.
Would appreciate any first hand recommendations about what to cook for dinner this week.
